Browse Plots

in the NEAR Magnetometer Processed Data Archive

Overview

In addition to the Magnetometer (MAG) data files, this disk contains browse plots which summarize some of the MAG data. There are three separate systems of browse plots, with each plot housed in a separate subdirectory of the BROWSE directory.

The three subdirectories of BROWSE are:

EBF   contains plots of the data in PDF format, based on data in the Eros Body Fixed (EBF) coordinate system. These plots are explained in the file EBF/INFO.TXT.
NSO   contains plots of the data in PDF format, based on data in the Near Sun Orbital (NSO) coordinate system. These plots are explained in the file NSO/INFO.TXT.
PROJECT   contains images in JPEG format, reflecting data from both coordinate systems. (The files in this subdirectory were received from the NEAR Magnetometer Team.) These plots are explained in the file PROJECT/INFO.TXT.

Links to all the PDF browse plots are included in the lists of links in MAGDATA1.HTM, MAGDATA2.HTM, and MAGDATA3.HTM.

Links to all the JPEG browse plots can be found via the page BROWSE/PROJECT/INDEX.HTM.

In addition to browse plots, this disk contains Splash files, which can be used to make custom plots of the data. An explanation of Splash files, along with links to them, can be found in MAGDATA1.HTM, MAGDATA2.HTM, and MAGDATA3.HTM. This disk also contains the Splash software, which can be used to view and manipulate Splash plots. For further important information on the Splash software and files, see SPLASH/INFO.TXT.

The PDF and Splash plots are scaled so as to remove data spikes due to propulsion events and similar sources. Some plots may appear to be scaled incorrectly; this is because the data contains large changes due to calibration events or other unusual occurrences within the data. Users who wish to rescale the data will be able to do so with the Splash software.
