This volume contains Calibrated data taken by the New Horizons PEPSSI during the Pluto encounter mission phase (Note 1). This volume also contains - mission documentation - spacecraft documentation - instrument documentation - data set documentation - index tables of the data - calibration information Note 1 ====== The nominal start and stop times for the Pluto encounter mission phase are 2015-01-15T00:00:00 and 2016-10-31T00:00:00 The time span of all data products in this volume will not coincide exactly with those nominal mission phase times, and may even extend days or weeks beyond them.    less ...

Rate Box Index vs. Energy and Time for PEPSSI

Summary
=======

The following summary has been adapted From the

PLUTO ENERGETIC PARTICLE SPECTROMETER SCIENCE INVESTIGATION

section of the Science Operations Center Instrument Interface Control
Document (SOC_INST_ICD, or just ICD; ca. 2015-12-31):

For Electrons and Low-Ions, the rate box definitions are simple ranges
in Energy and TOF in ADUs (Analog Digital Units, a.k.a. channel numbers)
which can be found in the Level 2 headers.

For Hi-Ions, the Rate Boxes are regions in the TOF-Energy plane (see
Figure 11-6 [in the ICD]).  The precise specification of the rate boxes
is complex and this is why we include rate box classifications in the
Level 2 PHA data. However, we also provide the file
RATEBOXDEFINITIONPLANES.FIT [this file] in the CALIB/ directory of PDS
data sets.

Through the Jupiter mission phase and into the Pluto Cruise mission
phase, PEPSSI has had three sets of Rate Box definitions.  There are
separate rate box definitions for Normal and Diagnostic mode.  The
RateBoxDefinitionPlanes.fit file contains 6 extenstions (3 sets x 2
modes).  The Rate Box classification data is presented as an image
containing the Rate Box id number (0-18) in the Time of Flight (TOF) vs
Energy plane.  TOF and Energy are presented in raw analog to digital
units (ADUs).  Thus, TOF ranges from 0-2047 and Energy from 0-1023.  The
Rate Box classification of any event can be determined by looking up the
corresponding pixel in the classification image.  In diagnostic mode,
Energy-only detections have a fill value of 2047 for TOF, and the Rate
Box classification image assumes these fill values.   The time range for
each set is given in the header of the respective HDU.  The ranges are:

+-------+----------------------------+
| Set 0 | Before 2006-7-7            |
+-------+----------------------------+
+ Set 1 | 2007-7-7 through 2007-5-24 |
+-------+----------------------------+
+ Set 2 | After 2007-5-24            |
+-------+----------------------------+

Details
=======

Each IMAGE OBJECT is a 3-dimensional representation of PEPSSI Rate Box
Definition for one of those sets above.  PEPSSI event measurements
comprise an Energy measurement and a Time-Of-Flight (TOF) measurement.
The combined (TOF,Energy) pair of each measurements represents a
position on the TOF vs. Energy plane.  Each position on that plane
corresponds to one of nineteen rate boxes, as displayed in Figure 11-6
of the SOC_INST_ICD document.

The LINE_SAMPLES axis in each IMAGE represents the Energy ADU (Analog-
Digital Units; raw energy data number) of a PEPSSI raw measurement,
LINE_SAMPLES positions 1 through 1024 corresponds to Energy ADU
measurements of 0 through 1023.

The LINES axis in each IMAGE represents the TOF ADU of a PEPSSI raw
measurement, LINES positions 1 through 2048 corresponds to TOF ADU
measurements of 0 through 2047.

The value of each location in the IMAGE OBJECT is the Rate Box Index
for that location's Energy and TOF ADU values.
