Brief Volume Description
=============================================================================
This volume includes vectors collected by the Pioneer Venus Orbiter
(previously Pioneer 12) Magnetometer. The data are provided in spacecraft
coordinates. In one format, apoapsis B, the magnetometer can be commanded
to return 3 vectors per minor frame. In most others it transmits one vector
per minor frame. In one format, periapsis E, it has no words in a minor
frame. At very low sampling rates at which time the sine wave due to
spacecraft spin could not be resolved. The magnetometer values are despun,
and averaged on board using a Walsh transform (square wave) in phase and
in quadiatune with the sun.
Version 2.0 of this data set includes new versions of some of the data
products. The ASCII MAG data (STANDARD_DATA_PRODUCT_ID =
'PVO MAG HR ASCII') was regenerated to correct errors in the Bz VSO
data values and replace bad data found in some files with flag values.
The ancillary ENGR ASCII and INSTSTAT ASCII data were likewise
regenerated to replace bad data with flag values.
Every effort has been made to assure that the data included on this volume
are of the best quality available. However, the PDS and the Planetary Plasma
Interactions (PPI) Node in particular, assume no liability for this volume or
its contents. All users are encouraged to verify the "correctness" of the
data prior to submitting any publications or other work based on these data.
All data files are stored in the "DATA" branch of the directory tree.
=============================================================================
File Formats
=============================================================================
Original Binary
The original data files submitted to the PDS are IGPP flatfiles. An IGPP
flatfile is a collection of 2 files, each of which could be considered
a table. The data file (.FFD) is a binary table of data values. The header
file (.FFH) is an ASCII table which describes the data file (.FFD) and is
used by the UCLA/IGPP Data Flow System (a software package).
ASCII
The original data were all binary, contained a nonstandard time
representation and were only provided in spacecraft coordinates. Software
was provided to convert the low resolution MAG data to VSO coordinates and
output as ASCII. This software was unsupportable so PDS created ASCII files
in VSO coordinates using the algorithm provided by the MAG team for use with
the low resolution data. These ASCII data are now provided along with the
original binary data files in this dataset. In addition, ASCII versions
of the ancillary data have also been provided along with the original binary
versions
Detached version 3.x PDS labels describe all files on this volume. PDS
labels are identified by a ".LBL" file name extension. There is one label
file for each text and data file (1 flatfile) contained on this volume and
the file name prefix is the same as the file the label describes. If the
dataset is stored as multiple files (as most of them are), there will be a
single format file which describes the physical structure of the data. This
format file is then pointed to by all of the labels. Both the label files
and the format files (*.FMT) are all located in the same directories as the
data they describe.

Errata
=============================================================================
Every effort has been made to assure that the data and documentation are of
the best possible quality. However, mistakes are inevitable. The PPI Node
of the PDS will maintain an online list of ERRATA where errors and updates
are documented. Should any user of this product find an error on this
volume, please report the error to the PPI Node so that the finding can
be made public. All users are encouraged to verify the correctness of the
data prior to submitting any publications or other work based on these data.
There is a file called ERRATA.TXT found at the root level of this volume
which contains a list of known deficiencies or caveats associated with data
on this volume at the time that it was produced.
If you find an error on this volume, please report it to the PDS Operator at
the PPI Node of the PDS (contact information below).

Contacts
===========================================================================
The person most directly responsible for the construction and release of
this volume is Mr. Steven Joy. He was the PPI Node Data Administrator at the
time this volume was created and understands as much about the volume
structure and data organization as anyone. Other PPI personnel who may be
aware of about issues related to this volume include Joe Mafi, Bill Harris,
and Dr. Raymond Walker, the PDS/PPI Node manager.

The PDS and the Planetary Plasma Interactions (PPI) Node in particular,
assume no legal liability for errors on this volume. All users are
encouraged to verify the correctness of the data prior to submitting any
publications or other work based on these data. Errors on this volume should
be reported back to the PPI Node of the PDS through the ERRATA reporting
procedures described above.
