Document Files

in the Pioneer Venus Orbiter Ion Mass Spectrometer Level 1 Archive

Overview

This disk contains several documents which describe the Pioneer Venus Orbiter mission and spacecraft and the Ion Mass Spectrometer instrument and data. These files are contained in subdirectories of the DOCUMENT directory of the disk.

Some of these documents are copyrighted by their respective publishers. Users of this CD-ROM and/or the Planetary Data System are required to comply with the copyright laws governing the usage of this material.

Other documentation for the Mars Global Surveyor mission, spacecraft, instruments, and data can be found in the catalog files for the disk.

Each of the following documents exists in an ASCII text version (file extension .ASC) and in either an HTML or a GIF image version (file extension .HTM or .GIF). The ASCII versions may not display the document as adequately as the other versions and may not contain the illustrations from the original document.

BRACE.ASC

BRACE.HTM

This file contains the Appendix extracted from

Brace, L. H. and A. J. Kliore, "Structure of the Venus Ionosphere", Space Science Reviews, v55, p81-163, 1991.

which describes some of the problems associated with the inter-calibration of the charged particle detectors aboard PVO.

LOW_RES.ASC

LOW_RES.GIF

This document describes the low resolution data products for the Orbiter Ion Mass Spectrometer (OIMS) that were provided by the principal investigators to the National Space Science Data Center. The document does not reflect exactly the current structure of the dataset.

HIGH_RES.ASC

HIGH_RES.GIF

This document describes the high resolution data products for the Orbiter Ion Mass Spectrometer (OIMS) that were provided by the principal investigators to the National Space Science Data Center. This documentation has been edited from the original, but it does not reflect exactly the current data file structure.

GREBOWSK.ASC

GREBOWSK.HTM

This file contains the Appendix, "Response of OIMS to Superthermal Ions", extracted from

Grebowsky, J. M., W. T. Kasprzak, R. E. Hartle, K. K. Mahajan, T. C. G. Wagner, "Superthermal ions detected in the Venus dayside ionosheath, ionopause, and magnetic barrier regions", J. Geophys. Res., vol 98, No. E5, pg 9055-9064, 1993.

which describes the response of OIMS to superthermal ions. The text has been included as part of the documentation accompanying the PVO-OIMS data in order to fulfill a requirement imposed during the PDS peer review process.

INST.ASC

INST.HTM

This file contains the article

Taylor, H. A. Jr., H. C. Brinton, T. C. G. Wagner, B. H. Blackwell, G. R. Cordier, "Bennett Ion Mass Spectrometers on the Pioneer Venus Bus and Orbiter", IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing, Volume GE 18, Number 1, p. 44-49, January, 1980.

which is an original instrument description and initial observations paper.

MILLER.ASC

MILLER.HTM

This file contains excerpts from the paper

Miller, K. L., W. C. Knudsen, and K. Spenner, "The Dayside Venus Ionosphere", Icarus, 57, 386-409, 1984.

This paper discusses some of the characteristics of the PVO ion detectors and their intercalibration.

MISSION.ASC

MISSION.HTM

This file contains the document "Pioneer Venus Mission Overview Document," which describes the PV mission based on the MISSION and INSTHOST catalog files and includes GIF images of many useful tables and figures from the following book:

Fimmel, R. O., L. Colin, and E. Burgess, Pioneering Venus: A Planet Unveiled, NASA SP-518, 1995.
