AIS is a component of the Mars Advanced Radar for Subsurface and Ionospheric Sounding (MARSIS) instrument on board the Mars Express spacecraft. In addition to providing remote sounding measurements of the Martian Ionosphere, AIS can at times be used to measure spacecraft local electron density and magnetic field strength. It is the objective of this volume to provide these derived data. The companion dataset MEX-M-MARSIS-3-RDR-AIS-V1.0 provides the standard AIS products from which these measurements were obtained. An overview of the measurement process for determining local electron density from MARSIS AIS ionograms can be found in the papes "Electron densities in the upper ionosphere of Mars from the excitation of electron plasma oscillations" by F. Duru et al. and "The processing of electron density profiles from the Mars Express MARSIS topside sounder" by D. D. Morgan et al., both listed in the REFERENCE.CAT file in the CATALOG directory. Similar information for the local magnetic field strength can be found in Akalin et al., "Dayside induced magnetic field in the ionosphere of Mars," also included in REFERENCE.CAT. Specific details of data columns and data confidence in these archive products can be found in the DATASET.CAT file which is also in the CATALOG directory. ======================================================================== Volume Overview - Quick Start Guide ======================================================================== The data files from which the browse products are produced, are located in the DATA directory and grouped in orbits of ten. [DATA] | |-[MARSIS_ELEDENS_BMAG] | |-[DDRxxxxX] | |-ELEDENS_BMAG_DDR_xxxxx.CSV The text data format is ASCII 7-bit comma separated values (CSV) files. The first line of each file consists of column headers with the actual data starting on the second line. Each file has 17 columns which cover the following areas: Measurement Time - 2 Columns Orbit Number - 1 Column Spacecraft Position - 8 Columns Plasma Density - 3 Columns Magnetic Field - 3 Columns In some instances the AIS data were suitable for collecting electron plasma density measurements but not magnetic field magnitude measurements (or vice-versa). In these cases the unmeasurable fields are left empty. This appears in the file as two filed separators placed next to each other with no field data. In the case that neither measurement was possible, the entire record is omitted. All fields are documented in an associated PDS label file accompanying each CSV file.
