The CRaTER pipeline was able to process part of DOY 171 but was unable to process any files from DOY 172, probably due to the incomplete definitive spice orientation file for that day. This delivery includes the final versions of the PDS4-compliant EDR ("L0") files covering the period from LRO launch through the end of 2022, as well as final versions of the PDS4-compliant EDR files covering 2023 DOY 001 through DOY 090, for which earlier test versions of PDS4 files were delivered. RELEASE NUMBER: 58 RELEASE DATE: 2024-06-15 DATA COVERAGE: 2024-01-01 to 2024-03-31 for EDR and RDR Products (FIFTH EXTENDED SCIENCE MISSION Phase) PRODUCT TYPES RELEASED FOR THIS ARCHIVE: EDR, RDR PRODUCT TYPES UPDATED FOR THIS ARCHIVE: None. Notes: On DOY 008 the D2 detector experienced a period of high electronic noise from approximately 00:15 UT to 06:00 UT. Of note is that noise levels briefly reached uncommon and possibly exceptional levels during a few bursts lasting less than a minute each between 02:40 UT and 02:55 UT. Noise levels have since returned to normal. It is unclear what caused the unusually high and brief peaks, although the phenomenon did occur during the declining phase of a moderate solar particle event, combined with instrument temperatures which were at the extreme high end of the normal range for the LRO mission. The processed data for the period 2016-10-01 to 2016-12-31 contains one period of missing CRaTER EDR/RDR data. Because of events on 2016-12-06 (DOY 341), data recording stopped at 2016-342-10:36. Recording resumed at 2016-342-23:26. The missing housekeeping data leaves a ~13 hour data gap in the CRaTER pipeline output. Additionally, the CRaTER pipeline software did not generate label files (.LBL) for DOY 342. Because of these problems, users should be aware of the possibility that the data around this time may be corrupted. At 2013-05-22 18:41 UTC (DOY 142) CRaTER transitioned into elevated rate mode due to a large solar particle event. In elevated rate mode, CRaTER only records events with two or more detector coincidences. Due to variations in particle fluxes during such events, CRaTER made multiple transitions into and out of elevated rate mode. The last transition out of elevated rate mode occurred at 2012-05-23 21:27 UTC (DOY 143). In the MODE_CHANGES.TAB file, only the first transition in to elevated rate mode and the last transition out of elevated rate mode are listed for this particle event. Notes: The processed data for the period 2012-07-01 to 2012-09-30 contains three periods of missing data. At 2012-08-04 2:15 UTC (DOY 217) CRaTER was powered down, resulting in a data gap of 14.15 hours. CRaTER was re-started and resumed normal operation at 2012-08-04 16:24 UTC. At 2012-09-04 7:51 UTC (DOY 248) CRaTER data gathering was interrupted, resulting in a total data gap of 18.53 hours. CRaTER was re-started and resumed normal operation at 2012-09-04 22:30 UTC. At 2012-09-08 1:14 UTC (DOY 252) CRaTER data gathering was interrupted, resulting in a data gap of 14.45 hours. CRaTER was re-started and resumed normal operation at 2012-09-08 15:42 UTC. Notes: The processed data for the period 2012-04-01 to 2012-06-30 contains one period of data which was recorded in elevated rate mode. At 2012-05-17 02:17 UTC (DOY 138) CRaTER transitioned into elevated rate mode due to a large solar particle event. In elevated rate mode, CRaTER only records events with two or more detector coincidences. Due to variations in particle fluxes during such events, CRaTER made several transitions into and out of elevated rate mode. The last transition out of elevated rate mode occurred at 2012-05-17 06:37 UTC. In the MODE_CHANGES.TAB file, only the first transition in to elevated rate mode and the last transition out of elevated rate mode are listed for this particle event. RELEASE NUMBER: 10 RELEASE DATE: 2012-06-15 DATA COVERAGE: 2012-01-01 to 2012-03-31 (SCIENCE MISSION Phase) PRODUCT TYPES RELEASED FOR THIS ARCHIVE: EDR, RDR PRODUCT TYPES UPDATED FOR THIS ARCHIVE: None. Notes: The processed data for the period 2012-01-01 to 2012-03-31 contains one period of missing data due to LRO entering SunSafe Mode. There are four periods of data which were recorded in elevated and/or extreme rate modes. There are also two periods of data for which the LLD baseline settings were changed to 72 instead of the nominal value of 71. Before LRO's entry into SunSafe mode, the last CRaTER science data was recorded at 2012-03-22T1:52:53 UTC. The CRaTER instrument was restored to full science operations and resumed recording at 2012-03-23T18:36:38 UTC (DOY 83), resulting in a data gap of 40.73 hours. The CRaTER instrument transitioned into elevated and extreme rate modes during four periods, due to two pairs of strong solar particle events which occurred on 2012-01-23 through 2012-01-25, 2012-01-27 through 2012-01-28, 2012-03-07 through 2012-03-10, and 2012-03-13 through 2012-03-14. In elevated rate mode, CRaTER only records events with two or more detector coincidences. In extreme rate mode, coincident detections are also required and the LLD settings of the thin detectors are raised to 80. Due to large variations in particle fluxes during large solar particle events, CRaTER made frequent transitions between elevated and extreme rate modes. In the MODE_CHANGES.TAB file, only the first transition in to extreme mode, and the last transition out of extreme rate mode, are listed for each solar particle event. Due to a software error, the LLD settings were restored to 72 (rather than the nominal 71) at the conclusion of the elevated and extreme rate modes. This resulted in two periods with off-nominal baseline LLD settings: 2012-01-23 to 2012-02-05, inclusive, and 2012-03-07 to 2012-03-22, inclusive. Notes: The processed data for the period 2011-10-01 to 2011-12-31 contains one period of missing data due to communication problems which required files to be deleted on LRO. The problem occurred on 2011-12-01 and 2011-12-02 (DOY 335 and 336). One CRaTER data science file for DOY 336 was lost. RELEASE NUMBER: 8 RELEASE DATE: 2011-12-15 DATA COVERAGE: 2011-07-01 to 2011-09-30 (SCIENCE MISSION Phase) PRODUCT TYPES RELEASED FOR THIS ARCHIVE: EDR, RDR PRODUCT TYPES UPDATED FOR THIS ARCHIVE: None. Notes: No known errors or variances. RELEASE NUMBER: 7 RELEASE DATE: 2011-09-15 DATA COVERAGE: 2011-04-01 to 2011-06-30 (SCIENCE MISSION Phase) PRODUCT TYPES RELEASED FOR THIS ARCHIVE: EDR, RDR PRODUCT TYPES UPDATED FOR THIS ARCHIVE: None. Notes: The processed data for the period 2011-04-01 to 2011-06-30 contains two periods of missing data. The first period resulted from an unplanned extended instrument power-down, the second from a communication downlink anomaly followed by a planned spacecraft-wide power-down. On 2011-04-03 at 17:32 UTC (DOY 093) the orbiter entered into sun-safe mode while executing off-nadir slews in support of lunar science observations and instrument calibrations. The immediate cause was the detection of a large slew by the orbiter's safing system, automatically activating a sun-safing command sequence. The root cause was a scheduling error which led to two overlapping large-angle off-nadir observation command sequences. The initiation of the second large off-nadir slew prior to full completion of the preceding slew maneuver left the safing system in the wrong configuration for the second slew, leading to the sun-safing command. On entry into sun-safe mode, all instruments and a subset of operational heaters were powered-down to conserve power in sunsafe mode. Full recovery to nominal spacecraft and instrument operations did not occur until 2011-04-04 16:48 UTC (DOY = 094). This anomaly is described in Anomaly Notification Report AR2011093 and the LRO Operations Weekly Report for 2011-03-29 through 2011-04-04. The sun-safing maneuver instrument power-downs and subsequent spacecraft and science instrument recovery operations resulted in a gap in CRaTER EDR/RDR data from 2011-04-03T17:28:06 (DOY 093) to 2011-04-04T14:19:43 (DOY 094), inclusive. The second missing data period spans 2011-06-14T07:51:15 (DOY 165) to 2011-06-17T12:11:53 (DOY 168), inclusive. This 76.34 hour data gap resulted from a confluence of ground communication station operational errors, the need to conserve orbiter battery power during a lunar eclipse, and an anomaly recovery period greatly extended by the need to perform an orbiter momentum dump maneuver. The immediate cause was a Ka-band downlink anomaly at 2011-06-14 09:40 UTC (DOY 165) due to an onboard initiated Ka-system shutdown while transactions were still in progress on the SpaceWire link, leading to SpaceWire link "back pressure" and blockage of further Ka-band downlink. The anomaly prevented the complete download of data from the orbiter's solid state recorders. Restoration of Ka-band downlink capability was delayed until 2011-06-16 ~21:00 UTC (DOY 167) due to special operations for the deep lunar eclipse on 2011-06-15 (DOY 166). All science instruments were powered down at 2011-06-15 ~18:30 UTC (DOY 166) to conserve battery power and ensure orbiter survival through the eclipse. Post-eclipse instrument power-on and return to nominal science observations were delayed by the need to complete the recovery of Ka-band downlink and perform a scheduled momentum dump maneuver. In addition to a loss of observations during the extended power- down, all CRaTER data files stored in the orbiter's solid state recorders at the time of the downlink anomaly were subsequently deleted due to recorder space requirements. This anomaly and subsequent activities are described in Anomaly Notification Report AR2011165 and the LRO Operations Weekly Report for 2011-06-14 through 2011-06-20. The cumulative result of these events is the 84.19 hour data gap as previously described. RELEASE NUMBER: 6 RELEASE DATE: 2011-06-15 DATA COVERAGE: 2011-01-01 to 2011-03-31 (SCIENCE MISSION Phase) PRODUCT TYPES RELEASED FOR THIS ARCHIVE: EDR, RDR PRODUCT TYPES UPDATED FOR THIS ARCHIVE: None. Notes: The processed data for the period 2011-01-01 to 2011-03-31 contains one period of missing data resulting from an extended instrument power-down. At 2011-02-23 15:27:58 UTC (DOY = 054) the orbiter experienced a low battery voltage anomaly during the termination of an extended solar array power output test, causing the orbiter to enter sun-safing mode. On entry into sun-safe mode, all instruments, star trackers, and three of four data storage boards were shut down. All data stored on the three affected data storage boards were erased; files not previously downloaded were permanently lost. Full recovery to nominal spacecraft and instrument operations did not occur until 2011-02-25 16:47 UTC (DOY = 056). This anomaly is described in Anomaly Notification Report AR2011054 and LRO Operations Weekly Report for the week of 2011-02-22 through 2011-02-28. The sun-safing maneuver instrument and data storage board power-downs and subsequent spacecraft and science instrument recovery operations resulted in a gap in CRaTER EDR/RDR data from 2011-02-23T14:12:18 (054) to 2011-02-25T14:54:42 (056), inclusive. RELEASE NUMBER: 5 RELEASE DATE: 2011-03-15 DATA COVERAGE: 2010-10-01 to 2010-12-31 (SCIENCE MISSION Phase) PRODUCT TYPES RELEASED FOR THIS ARCHIVE: EDR, RDR PRODUCT TYPES UPDATED FOR THIS ARCHIVE: None. Notes: The processed data for the period 2010-10-01 to 2010-12-31 contains one period of missing data resulting from an extended instrument power-down. The orbiter experienced an extended solar eclipse on 2010-12-21. The eclipse duration was a total of 306 minutes, including a 104 minute transition through the eclipse umbra. Pre-eclipse power analysis indicated that due to the eclipse duration, in particular the extended duration in the eclipse umbra, spacecraft battery power would drain to critically low levels. To ensure adequate battery power for spacecraft survival, non-critical systems were powered-down prior to entry into eclipse, including all science instruments. The power-down resulted in a gap in CRaTER EDR/RDR data from 2010-12-21T05:07:05 (355) to 2010-12-21T15:27:27 (355), inclusive. Notes: The processed data for the period 2010-07-01 to 2010-09-30 contains one period of missing data resulting from an extended instrument power-down. The station keeping #12 (SK12) maneuvers were performed during the period 2010-07-24 (DOY = 205) 14:30 - 19:15 UTC. Pre-maneuver analyses indicated that due to expected extended eclipse periods during the maneuver period, available spacecraft battery power levels could potentially reach critically low levels, causing the spacecraft to enter into sun-safe mode. To ensure adequate battery power availability, all LRO science instruments were powered- down during the maneuver period. This power-down resulted in a gap in CRaTER EDR/RDR data from 2010-07-24T14:33:06 (205) to 2010-07-25T00:52:51 (206), inclusive. Notes: The processed data for the period 2010-01-01 to 2010-03-31 contains several periods of missing or partial data resulting from spacecraft and instrument operating anomalies. Data users are cautioned to note these anomalous periods and the associated data use limitations. On 2010-02-09 (DOY = 040) the LRO spacecraft experienced a Ka-band playback anomaly following the Station Keeping #6 manuevers. This was followed on 2010-02-10 (DOY = 041) by a C&DH power-on reset. The power-on reset anomaly caused the spacecraft to enter a sun-safe mode, erased all operating parameters stored in volatile RAM, and erased all data still stored on the spacecraft's solid state recorders. Full recovery to nominal spacecraft and instrument operations did not resume until the beginning of 2010-02-16 (DOY = 047). These anomalies are described in spacecraft operations anomaly report S-LRO-OPS-0265 and LRO Operations Weekly Report for the week of 2010-02-09 through 2010-02-15. As a result of these anomalies there are large gaps in the CRaTER science and housekeeping data as well as ancillary spacecraft data required to fully process the CRaTER data into complete RDR data products. The data gaps are summarized below. Data Data Gap ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- CRaTER EDR/RDR 2010-02-10T15:03:50 (041) to 2010-02-15T20:09:05 (046) (inclusive) Spacecraft Pointing 2010-02-09T10:45:36 (040) to 2010-02-12T00:01:05 (043) (CK Kernel) (inclusive) Spacecraft Housekeeping 2010-02-09T14:30:48 (040) to 2010-02-11T03:10:05 (042) Data (inclusive) The CRaTER EDR/RDR data available during this anomaly period is summarized below. Date DOY EDR/RDR Data Available ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2010-02-09 040 00:00:00 to 23:59:59 (UTC) 2010-02-10 041 00:00:00 to 15:03:49 (UTC) 2010-02-11 042 None 2010-02-12 043 None 2010-02-13 044 None 2010-02-14 045 None 2010-02-15 046 20:09:06 to 23:59:59 (UTC) As a result of the partial/total absence of spacecraft pointing and housekeeping data for 2010-02-09 (040) and 2010-02-10 (041), the L2 secondary science and housekeeping RDR data are missing parameters derived from the spacecraft pointing and housekeeping data. The L2 secondary science data does not contain the Moon-to-spacecraft vector (MOON_ME) (columns 30-32). Instead, the missing values are replaced with "-1.0000e+00". The L2 housekeeping data does not contain the spacecraft 28VDC power bus voltage (column 4), CRaTER current draw from spacecraft 28VDC power bus (column 9), CRaTER power draw from spacecraft 28VDC power bus (V28bus*I28bus) (column 10), or instrument-boresite-points-off-lunar-surface and LRO-in-eclipse flags. The missing 28VDC power bus voltage, current draw, and power draw values are replaced with "-42.130," "-10.231," and "431.046", respectively. The missing data applies to ***ALL*** L2 secondary science and housekeeping RDR data records for 2010-02-09 (040) and 2010-02-10 (041). In particular, the Moon-to-spacecraft vectors and boresite point flags CANNOT be used to determine either spacecraft location or relative instrument pointing for 2010-02-09 (040) and 2010-02-10 (041). As a result of commanding errors during a pulser calibration procedure, the detector HV bias was erroneously left off during the period 2010-03-07T16:00:25 (066) and 2010-03-08T16:40:55 (067) (inclusive). The primary science data during this period are UNUSABLE and should be EXCLUDED from any data analyses. Similarly, the "Good," "Reject," and "Total" fields (columns 27-29) in the corresponding secondary science data records are INVALID and should also be EXCLUDED from any data analyses. RELEASE NUMBER: 1 RELEASE DATE: 2010-03-15 DATA COVERAGE: 2009-06-29 to 2009-12-31 (COMMISSIONING and NOMINAL MISSION Phases) PRODUCT TYPES RELEASED FOR THIS ARCHIVE: EDR, RDR PRODUCT TYPES UPDATED FOR THIS ARCHIVE: None. Notes: Initial delivery. No known errors or variances. ******** SECTION B ******** This section is provided for general notes concerning the archive as a whole. 2010-05-28: All spacecraft pointing-derived values contained in CRaTER RDR data (i.e., Moon-to-spacecraft vector, instrument-boresite-points-off-lunar- surface and LRO-in-eclipse flags) are based on the ORIGINAL CK kernels (MOC-42) provided by the MOC. Based on analyses performed and reported by the NAIF, the CRaTER instrument team determined that the error magnitude for pointing vectors computed with the original CK kernels is negligible in comparison to angular width of the instrument's particle acceptance cones. CRaTER RDR data will be reprocessed with updated CK kernels produced by the MOC if subsequent analyses determines the error in the pointing-derived values adversely impacts the dataset's scientific usefulness.
