END_OBJECT = TEXT END Cassini Orbiter Magnetometer CO-E_SW_J_S-MAG-3-RDR-CALIB-SHM-V2.0 Raw Magnetic Field Data Archive Planetary Plasma Interactions Discipline Node of the Planetary Data System COMAG_9010 1. Introduction This volume contains Cassini magnetometer (MAG) raw data covering 1999-08-18 (DOY 230) to 2005-10-11 (DOY 284). This data set contains magnetic-field data acquired during the cruise and tour phases of the Cassini mission to Saturn. Data collection began on 16 August (day 228), 1999. On this date, two days before the spacecraft commenced Earth swingby, the magnetometer boom was unfurled into its extended position; a configuration it maintained for the remainder of the mission. This dataset contains the data collected from the helium magnetometer while in scalar mode (SHM). The SHM mode is used only when high fields are expected, this means that SHM data is only collected infrequently and ceased being collected after 17 November (day 321), 2005 due to an instrument failure. 2. Volume format The data set volume is organized into a hierarchical directory structure. 3. File formats The data files on this volume are provided as IGPP Flatfiles which consist of a Sun IEEE binary data file (.FFD extension), and an ASCII header file (.FFH extension). Each data file is accompanied by a detached PDS label file (.LBL extension) which contains information describing the data file and data record format. Document files describing the volume, the data and data-calibration software are included in the volume. Software for calibrating the data, and transforming it to alternative coordinate systems, is provided on the volume. Software files include executable files for PC platforms, and source code (C++) in text files for compilation on other platforms. 4. Volume contents The files on this volume are organised into one Root directory containing several subdirectories. The following table shows the structure and content of these directories. In the table, directory names are enclosed in square brackets, upper-case letters indicate an actual directory or file name, and lower-case letters indicate the general form of a set of directories or file names. Errata Every effort has been made to ensure that the data and documentation are of the best possible quality. However, mistakes are inevitable. The PPI Node of the PDS will maintain an online list of ERRATA where errors and updates are documented. Should any user of this product find an error on this volume, please report the error to the PPI Node so that the finding can be made public. All users are encouraged to verify the correctness of the data prior to submitting any publications or other work based on these data. There is a file called ERRATA.TXT found at the root level of this volume which contains a list of known deficiencies or caveats associated with data on this volume. If you find an error on this volume, please report the error to the PDS Operator at the PPI Node of the PDS. Contacts The person most directly responsible for the construction and release of this archive volume is Mr. Steven Joy. He was the PPI Node Data Administrator at the time this volume was created and understands as much about the data structure and data organization as anyone. Other PPI personnel who may be aware of issues related to this archive volume include Mr. Joseph Mafi, and Dr. Raymond Walker, the PDS/PPI Node manager. The PDS and the Planetary Plasma Interactions (PPI) Node in particular, assume no legal liability for errors on this volume. All users are encouraged to verify the 'correctness' of the data prior to submitting any publications or other work based on these data. Errors on this volume should be reported back to the PPI Node of the PDS through the ERRATA reporting procedures described above.
