PDS_VERSION_ID = PDS3 RECORD_TYPE = STREAM OBJECT = TEXT PUBLICATION_DATE = 2017-04-03 NOTE = "AAREADME.TXT describes this volume." END_OBJECT = TEXT END Cassini Orbiter Cassini Plasma Spectrometer Calibrated Data Archive Planetary Plasma Interactions Discipline Node of the Planetary Data System ============================================================================== Introduction ============================================================================== This volume contains data from the Cassini Orbiter Cassini Plasma Spectrometer (CAPS) calibrated data set. This includes the following data products: Electron Spectrometer data (ELS) Ion Beam Spectrometer data (IBS) Ion Mass Spectrometer ion data (ION) Ion Mass Spectrometer singles data (SNG) Ion Mass Spectrometer 'time of flight' linear electric field data (TOFLEF), Ion Mass Spectrometer 'time of flight' straight through data product (TOFST). Data coverage includes 2004-001 (Jan 1) to 2012-154 (Jun 2). A complete description of the design of this volume is given in the CAPS archive volumes Software Interface Specification (SIS). An electronic copy of this document is located on this volume in the /DOCUMENT/CAPS_SIS directory. This volume is intended for the use of scientists and students in the study of solar wind and planetary energetic and neutral particles. The data may be used for research and publication. This volume complies with Planetary Data System (PDS) standards, Version 3.8, described in Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) document JPL D-7669. ============================================================================== Volume format ============================================================================== The disk is organized into a hierarchical directory structure. The disk contains both the Universal Disk Format (UDF) and the ISO 9660 (level 2) file system standards in order to accommodate users on a wide variety of platforms. All science data are located under the DATA directory. The INDEX directory contains a listing of all of the data products included on this volume. The CATALOG directory contains PDS documentation describing the mission, spacecraft, instrument, and data set. These include: CO_MISSION.CAT Cassini-Huygens mission description CO_INSTHOST.CAT Cassini orbiter spacecraft description CO_CAPS_INST.CAT CAPS instrument description CO_CAPS_CALIBRATED_DS.CAT CAPS calibrated data set description CO_CAPS_REF.CAT CAPS reference information CO_CAPS_PERS.CAT CAPS personnel contact information CO_PROJREF.CAT Cassini Project reference information Additional information on volume organization is given in the SIS (described above), and in section the 'Volume Contents' below. ============================================================================== File formats ============================================================================== The data files (*.DAT) are provided in flat IEEE binary format. Each data file is accompanied by a detached PDS label file (*.LBL), an ASCII file containing information describing the data file and data record format. The data record structure is described in a separate format (*.FMT) file, which is referenced in the label file with a pointer ("^STRUCTURE"). Catalog files (.CAT extension) are provided in ASCII format. Document files describing the volume, the data and data-calibration software are included in the volume. These files are given in MS Word, HTML and ASCII formats. Text files and detached label files contain 80-byte fixed-length ASCII records, with a carriage-return character (ASCII 13) in the 79th byte and a line-feed character (ASCII 10) in the 80th byte. This format allows the files to be read by MacOS, DOS, UNIX and VMS operating systems. Note that while both label and catalog files are ASCII, some operating systems will not recognize the .LBL and .CAT extensions as ASCII types. It may be necessary to either remap these extensions as ASCII in the system or text browser, or else to open the files from within the text browser. ============================================================================= Volume contents ============================================================================= The files on this volume are organised into one Root directory containing several subdirectories. The following table shows the structure and content of these directories. In the table, directory names are enclosed in square brackets, upper-case letters indicate an actual directory or file name, and lower-case letters indicate the general form of a set of directories or file names. However, mistakes are inevitable. The PPI Node of the PDS will maintain an online list of ERRATA where errors and updates are documented. Should any user of this product find an error on this volume, please report the error to the PPI Node so that the finding can be made public. All users are encouraged to verify the correctness of the data prior to submitting any publications or other work based on these data. There is a file called ERRATA.TXT found at the root level of this volume which contains a list of known deficiencies or caveats associated with data on this volume at the time this DVD was published. Any changes or errors that are found on this or any COCAPS_1XXX volume can be found at the PDS/PPI website (http://www.igpp.ucla.edu/cgi-bin/ditdos?errata=COCAPS_1XXX). If you find an error on this disk, please report the error to the PDS Operator at the PPI Node of the PDS.
