Every effort has been made to assure that the data are of the best quality available. However, the PDS and the Planetary Plasma Interactions (PPI) Node in particular, assume no liability for this disk or its contents. All users are encouraged to verify the "correctness" of the data prior to submitting any publications or other work based on these data. This CD-ROM contains data for orbits 3100-3599 covering the time period between 1987-06-01T17:39:19.256Z through 1988-10-13T11:53:35.195Z. ============================================================================== Errata ============================================================================== There is a file called ERRATA.TXT found at the root level of this volume which contains a list of changes and errors. This is a list of cumulative changes made to any ORPA RDR CD-ROM (volume PV02_xxxx) created by this production date. Any changes or errors that were found to any PPI CD after the production of this volume can be found via anonymous-ftp at srvsun.igpp.ucla.edu (ftp 128.97.68.55). The account name is anonymous and the password should be your e-mail address (it's nice to leave an audit trail). Change to the PDS errata directory (cd pds/ERRATA/PV02), and transfer the file ERRATA.TXT (get ERRATA.TXT). ============================================================================== Disk Format ============================================================================== The disk is organized into a hierarchical directory structure which the PPI Node hopes will be both intuitive for the user as well as easy to use. The disk is formatted according to both ISO 9660 and POSIX (Unix) standards in order to accommodate users on a wide variety of platforms. All of the label, table, and text files are ascii with CR/LF (VAX / IBM-PC) format. The basic organization of the disk is as follows: CATALOG contains instrument, dataset, and processing templates organized into one file called CATALOG.CAT. This single file can be used as the source of all "metadata" regarding this data archive. THERE IS NO CATALOG INFORMATION ON THIS DISK! The ORPA RDR Catalog templates are contained on disk PV02_0001, the first volume in this series. DATA contains all data and catalog templates in a branching tree structure of sub-directories. Data for orbits 3100-3199 are located in the ORB3100 sub-directory, the data for orbits 3200-3299 are in the ORB3200 sub-directory, the data from orbits 3300-3399 are in the ORB3300 sub-directory, the data from orbits 3400-3499 are in the ORB3400 sub-directory, and the data from orbits 3500-3599 are in the ORB3500 sub-directory. Data files are given an orbit filename of the form "ORBXXXX.RDR" where XXXX is the orbit number. INDEX contains a cumulative index table (CUM_INDX.TAB) which describes the location of all files on the PV02 collection (ORPA - RDR). In addition, there is a file (INDEX.TAB) which gives the name and location of all files on this volume. These index files have been provided for users who do not wish to make use of the DITDOS software. MANAGE contains data management information for the DITDOS software. Users do not need to make use of any of these files directly, however, the software which allows DITDOS to extract and reformat data files needs to have this information. SOFTWARE contains data processing software provided by the ORPA Principal Investigator which will read the raw (reformatted) data files and perform a routine data processing (Least Squares Fit). This software may contain platform dependencies. THERE IS NO SOFTWARE ON THIS DISK! The ORPA RDR processing software is contained on disk PV02_0001, the first volume in this series. ============================================================================== File Format ============================================================================== All files on this disk are described by detached version 3.0 PDS labels. Version 3.0 of the PDS label does not support detached TEXT file labels, however, TEXT file labels are detached on this disk. PDS labels are identified by a .LBL file name extension. There is one label file for each text and data file contained on this disk and the file name prefix is the same as the file the label describes. The data on this disk are identified with PDS short labels. If the dataset is is stored as multiple files (as most of them are), there will be a single ASCII text format file which describes the physical structure of the data. This format file is then pointed to by all of the labels. Both the label files and the format file (DATAFMT.TXT) are all grouped in the same directories as the data they describe. ============================================================================== Volume Contents ============================================================================== This section describes the volume structure and naming conventions. This basic disk structure is described in the disk format section. Here we describe the directory structure of this volume and the names/contents of the key files in each directory. Catalog Directory: A single file, CATALOG.CAT, contains all the catalog information. THERE IS NO CATALOG INFORMATION ON THIS DISK! The ORPA RDR Catalog templates are contained on disk PV02_0001, the first volume in this series. The ORPA RDR Software is contained on disk PV02_0001, the first volume in this series. All of the software is provided by the PVO-ORPA team and and may not be platform independent. The "INFO.TXT" files will help the user to determine if a desired program or application can be used on their platform. Software is available from the PPI Node via an anonymous ftp account - srvsun.igpp.ucla.edu (128.97.68.55), and VAX users can obtain software from UCLASP::DISK$SCRATCH:[PDSUSER.SOFTWARE]. Installation procedures will be provided for all software on this disk in the INSTALL. file. In general, if the installation location is fully compatible with the development platform, the executable will be moved to the installation area. If there are minor incompatibilities (operating system version or compiler version differences) a new executable will be generated from the object code. If there are major incompatibilities (i.e. unsupported platform) and source code is available, the user will have to port the code to the platform needed. File naming will be freeform, however, the file name extensions will follow the standard naming for Unix platforms (.F - Fortran source code, .C - "C" source code, .O - object code, etc.) Index Directory: The index directory contains a cumulative index (CUM_INDX.TAB) which points to every file in this volume series (Volumes PV02_xxxx - RPA-RDR series) and a local index file (INDEX.TAB) which contains a listing of every file on this disk. The index files are ascii tables which can be easily loaded into a database or spreadsheet program. The index files are described by detached PDS labels. Manage Directory: This directory contains several IGPP flatfiles which are used by some of the software in the software directory. These files are not intended for direct use by a user so there are no PDS labels. Data Directory: The data directory is subdivided into multiple levels by groups of orbits in order to keep the number of files in a single directory to a managable number. For example DATA ORB3100 ! Orbits 3100-3199 ORB3200 ! Orbits 3200-3299 ORB3300 ! Orbits 3300-3399 ORB3400 ! Orbits 3400-3499 ORB3500 ! Orbits 3500-3599 The data files, labels, and dataset catalog templates are contained in the sample rate subdirectory. Any files which apply to all datasets further down the tree, are placed at the level at which this transition occurs. This applies to many catalog templates, as well as, calibration files or ancillary information files. Data files are named using the orbit number of the file. Files whose names are Orbit numbers begin with the letters "ORB" and give the orbit in the format ORBXXXX. If the number of files within a single sample rate directory would exceed the ISO 9660 CDROM standard of 255, an additional directory level is added. This level is given an orbit count name which follows the convention just described. In this case, the directory is given the same name as the first file in that directory. Note: There is a file called YMTRANS.TBL in every directory. This is part of the CD ROM production software and cannot be avoided. Also within each of the DATA sub-directories there is a file called ZZINPUT.PDS which is a necessary production file, but not for the user. Excuse any inconvenience that these files may cause. ============================================================================== Driver and Hardware Information ============================================================================== This disk has been formatted according to the ISO standard for CDROM production (9660) with level 1 compliance. Any system which complies with this standard (all of them should) should be able to access this disk. 5.
