Simpson Stanford University ============================================================================== INTRODUCTION ============================================================================== This file contains a listing of errors, anomalies, and other notes regarding the Science Data Product archive from the Mars Global Surveyor Radio Science Team. ============================================================================== ERRORS, ANOMALIES, AND OTHER NOTES ============================================================================== All Four keywords in label files in the IMG and SRI directories may be Volumes used in non-standard ways. The keywords are WESTERNMOST_LONGITUDE, EASTERNMOST_LONGITUDE, MINIMUM_LATITUDE, and MAXIMUM_LATITUDE. As used in radio science products, these are the extreme values at pixel centers rather than the extremes of the area represented. For example, if the image has 180 rows at equally spaced latitudes (-89.5, -88.5, ..., -0.5, +0.5, ..., +89.5) then MINIMUM_LATITUDE = -89.5 and MAXIMUM_LATITUDE = 89.5 in IMG and SRI labels. A more conventional usage might have these same keywords set to -90.0 and +90.0, respectively, because those are the limits of the area represented by the pixels. In cases where the radio science image has 181 rows (-90.0, -89.0, ..., -1.0, 0.0, +1.0, ..., +90.0), the radio science label would show MINIMUM_LATITUDE = -90.0 and MAXIMUM_LATITUDE = 90.0 The more conventional label, in this case, would have the same values. This difference in usage was pointed out after MORS_1006 was written, and was still being discussed while MORS_1007 and MORS_1008 were being mastered. Rather than change usage of these four keywords in the middle of the mission or revise labels on approximately 900 IMG and SRI files (and reissue all the corresponding CDs), Radio Science opted to continue its original usage. A note was added to CATALOG/DSMAP2.CAT explaining the Radio Science usage. All The interleaving of new volume production with revisions of older Volumes volumes will result in introduction of data that appear to be out of sequence. For example, CATALOG/DATASET.CAT will be updated prior to release of MORS_1011 to show the new data. If a revision of MORS_1010 is created later, the DATASET.CAT on MORS_1010;2 will include information about MORS_1011. Similar anomalies will appear in ERRATA.TXT and INDEX/CUMINDEX.TAB. Many PDS recommends that no more than 256 files appear in any one Volumes directory. This is violated on some volumes, particularly in directories TPS, SRG, SRI, and SRT. For example, MORS_1010 has 800 TPS files and MORS_1011 has 577. MORS_1001 The following files were omitted from the DOCUMENT directory. None of the affected product formats had been finalized, and none of the products were included in the volume. The documents themselves were incomplete. LOSAPDR.TXT RSIPS.TXT SHBDR.TXT File JGM50C01.SHA in the SHA directory has no uncertainties for coefficient values. Uncertainties were included when the file was archived on the MGS Sampler CD (MGS_0001). Users needing the uncertainties are referred to the Sampler. File JGM50C01.SHA was described as being based on IAU 1994 coordinates. In fact, it was based on IAU 1991 coordinates [DAVIESETAL1992B]. Versions 1-3 have a spurious "END" at or near line 105 in the CATALOG/REF.CAT file (after DAVIESETAL1995). MORS_1002 Version 1: Back-to-front pagination in DOCUMENT/AAS99147.PS; front-to back pagination was used starting in Version 2. Version 1: DOCUMENT/DOCINFO.TXT listed RSIPS.TXT as being present in the DOCUMENT directory; it was not. The same file failed to mention that AAS9147.* files were present. These errors were corrected in Version 2. Versions 1-2: DOCUMENT/DOCINFO.TXT in Version 1 listed OCCLOGxx.TAB as being present, but the file was missing. On Version 2 OCCLOGA2.TAB was present, but DOCINFO.TXT failed to mention it. These errors were corrected on Version 3. Version 1: SHA/GGM0890A.LBL claims REFERENCE_RADIUS is in KM, but the data file has the value in meters. Corrected in Version 2. Version 1: SHA/GGM0890A.SHA has columns 4 and 5 swapped compared with how they are specified in GGM0890A.LBL. Fixed in Version 2. Versions 1-2: Minor formatting and spelling errors corrected in going from Version 1 to Version 2. Versions 1-2: There is a spurious "END" at or near line 105 in the CATALOG/REF.CAT file (after DAVIESETAL1995). Versions 2-3: OCCLOGA1.LBL and OCCLOGA1.TAB are not shown in the directory tree in AAREADME.TXT. MORS_1003 Version 1 has a spurious "END" at or near line 105 in the CATALOG/REF.CAT file (after DAVIESETAL1995). Version 1 SHA/GGM0964A.SHA has columns 4 and 5 swapped compared with how they are specified in GGM0890A.LBL. Fixed in Version 2. Versions 1-2: IMG/JGD75B50.LBL specifies UNIT = METERS in the OBJECT definition for the image. It should be UNIT = MILLIGAL. Versions 1-2: In the IMG directory labels JGD75B50.LBL and JOD75B50.LBL have ^DATA_SET_MAP_PROJECTION = "DSMAP.CAT". The correct file is "DSMAP2.CAT". MORS_1004 Version 1 has incorrect units in the IMG/JGD75C60.LBL OBJECT = IMAGE definition. The correct statement should be UNIT = MILLIGAL. Corrected in Version 2. Version 1 has a disallowed character (ASCII 22) in line 385 of DOCUMENT/RSADCSDP.TXT. Version 1: In the IMG directory label JGD75B50.LBL has ^DATA_SET_MAP_PROJECTION = "DSMAP.CAT". The correct file is "DSMAP2.CAT". Versions 1-2: Files in the SRG, SRI, and SRT directories were reissued with minor improvements in MORS_1007. SRT labels were improved, and SRG tables were based on IPN (rather than SPK) files. MORS_1005 Version 1 DOCUMENT/OCCLOGM1.LBL has the wrong DATA_SET_ID. It should be "MGS-M-RSS-5-SDP-V1.0". Version 1 DOCUMENT/OCCLOGM1.TAB has a spelling error in line 571. "dropuot" should be replaced by "dropout". Versions 1-2: Files in the SRG, SRI, and SRT directories were reissued with minor improvements in MORS_1007. SRT labels were improved, and SRG tables were based on IPN (rather than SPK) files. MORS_1006 Version 1: Three editorial errors in AAREADME.TXT and three editorial errors in each label file in the SHA and SHB directories were corrected in Version 2. Version 2: In CATALOG/DATASET.CAT "nnnnvv" should be replaced by "nnnnnn" in line 312. Version 2: In DOCUMENT/OCCLOGM1.LBL the DATA_SET_ID is incorrect; it should be "MGS-M-RSS-5-SDP-V1.0". MORS_1007 Version 2: CATALOG/DATASET.CAT line 639: "MORS_1008" should be "MORS_1009" CATALOG/DATASET.CAT line 648: "JDG75E60" should be "JGD75E60" CATALOG/DATASET.CAT line 649: "JOG75E60" should be "JOD75E60" DOCUMENT/RSADCSDP.TXT is truncated in section 4.2.2.8; see MORS_1008;2 for the correct file. DOCUMENT/OCCLOGA2.LBL: Move double quote from line 23 to 28. MORS_1008 Postscript files in the DOCUMENT directory should print or display in front-to-back order. But there have been reports from some users of back-to-front ordering. Version 2: CATALOG/DATASET.CAT line 661: "MORS_1008" should be "MORS_1009" CATALOG/DATASET.CAT line 650: "JDG75E60" should be "JGD75E60" CATALOG/DATASET.CAT line 651: "JOG75E60" should be "JOD75E60" MORS_1010 Version 1: AAREADME.TXT directory tree shows the wrong files in OCS. DOCUMENT/OCCLOGM3.TAB does not have line delimiters. Revised CATALOG/DSMAP2.CAT to include a definition of CENTER_LATITUDE. MORS_1011 Version 1: AAREADME.TXT shows OCCLOGM1.TAB and its label in the directory tree diagram; those files are not present on the volume and should have been omitted from the diagram. In the same diagram the coverage of OCCLOGM3.TAB should be shown as 1999-2001 rather than 1999-2000. Version 1: More accurate TPS files were computed using a different method for reconstructing high-gain antenna position. Those 576 files (on MORS_1016) should be used in place of the TPS files on MORS_1011. File 0325Q18A.TPS was so badly degraded by antenna motion that it was not rereleased on MORS_1016; the original on MORS_1011 should not be used at all. MORS_1012 Version 1: AAREADME.TXT should say there are only 715 SRG files rather than 725. The 'missing' SRG files are: 0005B2FA.SRG 0005B5IA.SRG 0007B0CA.SRG 0007C2GA.SRG 0013T1DA.SRG 0016T4GA.SRG 0027S3BA.SRG 0027T0IA.SRG 0028K1CA.SRG 0030T0EA.SRG In each case, the occultation was captured by two ground antennas and the SRG file was constructed only for the first recording. The following SRG files can be substituted for most applications: 0005B25A.SRG 0005B58A.SRG 0007B02A.SRG 0007C26A.SRG 0013T13A.SRG 0016T46A.SRG 0027S31A.SRG 0027T08A.SRG 0028K12A.SRG 0030T04A.SRG MORS_1013 Version 1: In AAREADME.TXT the OCS file and label should be 008010AA.OCS and 008010AA.LBL, respectively, rather than 011012AA.OCS and 011012AA.LBL. Version 1: More accurate TPS files were computed using a different method for reconstructing high-gain antenna position. Those 826 files (on MORS_1015) should be used in place of the TPS files on MORS_1013. MORS_1014 Version 1: DATASET.CAT: The paragraph describing the coverage of MORS_1014 was omitted. MORS_1015 Version 1: DOCUMENT/OCCLOGM1.LBL and DOCUMENT/OCCLOGM3.LBL show DATA_SET_ID for raw data rather than the correct "MGS-M-RSS-5-SDP-V1.0". MORS_1016 Version 1: AAREADME.TXT erroneously contains "Summary of Volume Contents" and "Citation" information for MORS_1015. The latter can easily be corrected by substituting MORS_1016 for the Volume. The volume contents are described correctly in CATALOG/DATASET.CAT. DOCUMENT/OCCLOGM3.LBL shows DATA_SET_ID for raw data rather than the correct value "MGS-M-RSS-5-SDP-V1.0". MORS_1017 Version 1: AAREADME.TXT shows a citation date of 2001; it should be 2002. DOCUMENT/OCCLOGM3.LBL shows DATA_SET_ID for raw data rather than the correct value "MGS-M-RSS-5-SDP-V1.0". MORS_1018 Version 1: AAREADME.TXT shows incorrect coverage. The correct coverage is: 2001-01-01 (01/001) 2001-06-20 (02/171) TPS 1/02-6; SRA 1/01-3 DOCUMENT/OCCLOGM3.TAB should have delimiters at the end of each line; only delimiters are present.
