Volume GOPR_1001 Galileo Photopolarimeter (PPR): Observation and Calibration Data Reformatted Experiment Data Record 1989-12-27 to 1994-07-21 from the Planetary Plasma Interactions Node of the Planetary Data System ============================================================================== Introduction ============================================================================== This CD-ROM contains data submitted to the Planetary Data System (PDS) by Galileo PPR investigators. This disk contains data taken from the initial checkout to the Shoemaker-Levy 9 encounter (1989-12-27 to 1994-07-21). This disk contains initial checkout data, all observation data for these encounters, and calibration data from the Venus encounter and the first Earth encounter. Every effort has been made to ensure that the data are of the best quality available. However, the PDS and the Planetary Plasma Interactions (PPI) Node in particular, assume no liability for this disk or its contents. Users are encouraged to verify the 'correctness' of the data prior to submitting any publications or other work based on these data. Brief Disk Description This CD-ROM is organized into 5 principal sub-directories: CATALOG PDS catalog templates describing the Galileo mission, spacecraft, instruments, data sets, key personnel and references DATA science data from the PPR (Photopolarimeter) DOCUMENT documents describing instruments, data sets, or software contained on this volume INDEX index of all user files contained on this volume More information on directory structure is contained in the section entitled 'Volume Contents and Structure.' Novice users, however, may ignore all files and directories except for the 'Important Files and Directories' listed below. Important Files and Directories All data files are stored, in ASCII (.TAB) format files, in the 'DATA' branch of the directory tree. The content of each data file is described by a detached PDS label file (.LBL). A single format file (.FMT), which is pointed to by the label file (^STRUCTURE), describes the data file's internal structure or record format. The files *DS.CAT provide additional information about data set and directory contents. An AAREADME.TXT or *INFO.TXT file (e.g. CATINFO.TXT), containing a detailed description of directory contents, is located in every sub-directory of the CD-ROM. Since these files can be quite large they list information in order of importance. Users may refer to these files for specific information about the naming convention and content of key files, data file coverage, the location of related data or information, etc. ============================================================================== Volume Series Information ============================================================================== This CD-ROM is the first volume of the "GALILEO PHOTOPOLARIMETER (PPR)" (GOPR_100X) volume series. Volumes in this series include: Volume ID Medium Volume Name Type GOPR_1001 (CD-ROM) GALILEO PHOTOPOLARIMETER: OBSERVATION AND CALIBRATION DATA GOPR_1002 (CD-ROM) GALILEO PHOTOPOLARIMETER: CALIBRATION DATA ============================================================================== Documents ============================================================================== The documents provided on this CD-ROM (in the /DOCUMENT/PPR_INST sub-directory) include copyrighted materials previously published in Space Science Reviews, Vol. 60, pp. 531-563, 1992. These materials appear on this CD-ROM with the permission of Kluwer Academic Publications (Kluwer). Kluwer retains Copyright over these articles. Please see the Copyright statement appearing at the beginning of each of the Space Science Reviews articles. ============================================================================== File Formats ============================================================================== All of the label, table, and text files are ASCII with CR/LF (VAX/IBM-PC) format. All files on this disk are described by detached or combined detached PDS labels. PDS labels have a file extension of '.LBL' and generally have the same name as the file which it describes. All PDS label files on this CD-ROM are completely PDS Standards Version 3.2 compliant. Data files are stored in ASCII (.TAB). ASCII file records are generally fixed length with space delimited fields or columns. Refer to the label (.LBL) and format (.FMT) files for information about the format and structure of a specific data file. This CD-ROM contains copies of documents associated with the data provided. These documents are reproduced in either plain ASCII text (.ASC) or HTML (.HTM) versions. For HTML documents, figures from the original documents have been scanned and are provided in GIF89A format. Some documents also are stored in word processor formats, such as MS Word. ============================================================================== Errata ============================================================================== For a description of any errors known at the time of the production of this CD-ROM, please refer to the file ERRATA.TXT found on the root directory. Changes or errors found after production can be found via anonymous-ftp at pdsppi.igpp.ucla.edu. Login as 'anonymous' and provide your e-mail address as a password (in order to provide an audit trail). Change directories to ERRATA/GOPR_1001 (cd ERRATA/GOPR_1001), and transfer the file ERRATA.TXT (get ERRATA.TXT). ============================================================================== Volume Contents and Structure ============================================================================== The tree diagram below shows the root directory (including its top level sub-directories), plus the top level of the /DATA sub-directory only. It also provides a brief summary of directory contents and a list of key files. Note that not all files are listed. Each file on this CD-ROM (with the exception of *.CAT files) is accompanied by a PDS label file (.LBL) which describes the content and characteristics of the associated file. For more detailed information, please refer to the AAREADME.TXT or *INFO.TXT file located on every directory below the root. Square brackets ([]) denote directories. Please note also that the 'DATA' directory is listed out of alphabetical order for the sake of readability.
