END_OBJECT = TEXT END Volume GOMA_3001 Galileo Orbiter-Pre-Jupiter Encounters Magnetometer Processed and Trajectory Datasets for the Venus, Earth 1, Gaspra, Earth2, and Ida Flybys Planetary Plasma Interactions Node of the Planetary Data System ============================================================================== Introduction ============================================================================== This disk contains Galileo (GO) magnetometer (MAG) processed data products submitted to the Planetary Data System (PDS) by the MAG principal investigator (PI). Every effort has been made to assure that the data are of the best quality available. However, the PDS and the Planetary Plasma Interactions (PPI) Node in particular, assume no liability for this disk or its contents. All users are encouraged to verify the "correctness" of the data prior to submitting any publications or other work based on these data. This DVD-R contains data for the Galileo Venus, Earth 1, Gaspra, Earth 2, and Ida encounters. All data is contained in the DATA directory. ============================================================================== Brief Disk Description ============================================================================== This disk contains directories with the following names. A description of their contents is given. *INFO.TXT files have further descriptions. CATALOG Contains PDS Catalog templates which contain information describing the mission, spacecraft, instrument, data sets, personnel, and references. DOCUMENT Contains the magnetometer instrument paper, including all figures and images in GIF format. Also contains magnetometer related pages from other Galileo documents. DATA Contains all of the science data. Data is sorted into subdirectories by data type. EXTRAS Contains files that may be helpful to some users. INDEX Contains a complete index of all files of interest including file location and associated data sets. Each encounter is given a subdirectory and each dataset is located in a subdirectory beneath that. All data are stored in ASCII tables which are described by a detached PDS label (.LBL) and format file (.FMT). Metadata are stored as text files with the data. The particular form of meta-data which forms the PDS catalog can be found in the CATALOG directories of the virtual volumes. Again, the catalog directory is sub-divided by encounter. Any documents which have been provided for inclusion of this volume can be found in the DOCUMENT directory. In particular, the Space Science Reviews (SSR) instrument paper can be found in the root of the DOCUMENT directory, reprinted by permission of Kluwer Academic Publishers. Users of this disk should read the INFO.TXT files located in each data directory which describe the data in that directory, as well as the other files in that directory. It begins by describing the type of data in the directory, and the names of the most useful user files. Also described is the structure of the data files. Novice users can ignore all directories and files except for those mentioned in this brief description. ============================================================================== Volume Set Information ============================================================================== This volume set previously consisted of 10 CD-R's (GOMA_3001 through GOMA_3010), but has been reorganized into a single DVD-R (GOMA_3001). ============================================================================== Errata ============================================================================== There is a file called ERRATA.TXT found at the root level of this volume which contains a list of changes and errors if there are any at the time this volume was published. An updated version of the ERRATA.TXT file may be found at the PDS/PPI website: (http://www.igpp.ucla.edu/cgi-bin/ditdos?errata=GOMA_3001). If you find an error on this disk, please report the error to the PDS Operator at the PPI Node of the PDS. All data on this disk are in ASCII format (*.TAB). PDS labels are identified by a .LBL file name extension. There is one label file for each text and data file contained on this disk and the file name prefix is the same as the file the label describes. If the dataset is stored as multiple files there is a single format file (*.FMT) which describes the physical structure of the data. This format file is then pointed to by all of the labels. Both the label files and the format files are all located in the same directories as the data they describe. ============================================================================== Disk Format ============================================================================== The disk is organized into a hierarchical directory structure. The disk contains both the Universal Disk Format (UDF) and the ISO 9660 (level 2) file system standards in order to accommodate users on a wide variety of platforms. ============================================================================== Volume Contents and Structure ============================================================================== This section describes the volume structure. Below is a tree diagram of the CD-ROM, followed by a description of the directory function. GOMA_3001 | |- AAREADME.TXT describes volume contents, organization and CD-ROM use | (this file) | |- ERRATA.TXT describes known deficiencies or caveats in the data or | on this volume | |- VOLDESC.CAT high level description of volume contents | |- [CALIB] data set calibration information | |- [CATALOG] Information on data sets and how they are processed and | produced. Any system which complies with this standard (all of them should) should be able to access this disk. ============================================================================== Contacts ============================================================================== The person most directly responsible for the construction and release of this CD-ROM is Mr. Steven Joy. He was the PPI Node Data Administrator at the time this disk was created and understands as much about the disk structure and data organization as anyone. The construction of the PDS labels and templates was done by Mr. Joseph Mafi. Other PPI personnel who may be aware of about issues related to this CD-ROM include Dr. Raymond Walker, the PDS/PPI node manager.
