Introduction

This DVD is the Jupiter volume 1 of the Cassini Orbiter Magnetospheric Imaging Instrument (MIMI) uncalibrated data volume set. It includes LEMMS, CHEMS, and INCA data from the interval 2000-340 (5 Dec) to 2001-024 (24 Jan). Documentation and calibration information (necessary for converting these data into physically meaningful units) is provided on the MIMI Reference Volume (COMIMI_0000). The latest version of the Reference Volume is available on-line at http://ppi.pds.nasa.gov/search/view?f=yes&id=pds://PPI/COMIMI_0000.

A complete description of the design of this volume is given in the MIMI archive volumes software interface specification (VOLSIS) which is on the Reference Volume in the /DOCUMENT/MIMI_VOLUME_DESCRIPTION directory.

This volume is intended for the use of scientists and students in the study of solar wind and planetary energetic and neutral particles. The data may be used for research and publication.

The Cassini Orbiter MIMI uncalibrated volume set contains uncalibrated data from the Cassini Magnetospheric Imaging Instrument Low Engergy Magnetospheric Measurement System (LEMMS), Charge/Energy Mass Spectrometer (CHEMS), and Imaging Neutral Camera (INCA). The data are given in uncalibrated events and particle counts.

This volume complies with Planetary Data System (PDS) standards, Version 3.6, described in Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) document JPL D-7669.

Volume format

An HTML interface has been created for this volume allowing easy access to the data and other files using a web browser. Entry into the HTML interface is through the file 'AAREADME.HTM' located in the root directory. The disk is organized into a hierarchical directory structure. The disk contains both the Universal Disk Format (UDF) and the ISO 9660 (level 2) file system standards in order to accommodate users on a wide variety of platforms. All science data are located under the DATA directory. The INDEX directory contains a listing of all of the data products included on this volume. The CATALOG directory contains PDS documentation describing the mission, spacecraft, instrument, and data set. These include:

  MISSION.CAT Cassini-Huygens mission description
  INSTHOST.CAT Cassini orbiter spacecraft description
  INST.CAT MIMI instrument description
CO_MIMI_CHEMS_DS.CAT MIMI CHEMS uncalibrated data set description
CO_MIMI_INCA_DS.CAT MIMI INCA uncalibrated data set description
CO_MIMI_LEMMS_DS.CAT MIMI LEMMS uncalibrated data set description
  CO_MIMI_REF.CAT MIMI reference information
  PERSON.CAT MIMI personnel contact information
  PROJREF.CAT Cassini project reference information

Additional information on volume organization is given in the VOLSIS (described above), and in section the 'Volume Contents' below.

File formats

The data files on this volume are provided in ASCII comma-separated value (CSV) format. Note that some of the CSV files contained on this volume may be larger than the maximum limit imposed by some spreadsheet applications. Caution should be used to insure that the data are handled correctly. Each data file is also accompanied by a detached PDS label file (.LBL extension), an ASCII file containing information describing the data file and data record format. Catalog files (.CAT extension) are provided in ASCII format. Note, however, that as '.CAT' is a reserved file extension under MS Windows it may be necessary to specify a text editor when opening PDS catalog files. Document files describing the volume, the data and data-calibration software are included in the volume. These files are given in MS Word, HTML and ASCII formats. Text files and detached label files contain 80-byte fixed-length ASCII records, with a carriage-return character (ASCII 13) in the 79th byte and a line-feed character (ASCII 10) in the 80th byte. This format allows the files to be read by MacOS, DOS, UNIX and VMS operating systems. Note that while both label and catalog files are ASCII, some operating systems will not recognize the .LBL and .CAT extensions as ASCII types. It may be necessary to either remap these extensions as ASCII in the system or text browser, or else to open the files from within the text browser.

Errata

Every effort has been made to ensure that the data and documentation are of the best possible quality. However, mistakes are inevitable. The PPI Node of the PDS will maintain an online list of ERRATA where errors and updates are documented. Should any user of this product find an error on this volume, please report the error to the PPI Node so that the finding can be made public. All users are encouraged to verify the correctness of the data prior to submitting any publications or other work based on these data.

There is a file called ERRATA.TXT found at the root level of this volume which contains a list of known deficiencies or caveats associated with data on this volume at the time this DVD was published. Any changes or errors that are found on this or any COMIMI_0XXX volume can be found at the PDS/PPI website (http://www.igpp.ucla.edu/cgi-bin/ditdos?errata=COMIMI_0XXX).

If you find an error on this disk, please report the error to the PDS Operator at the PPI Node of the PDS.
