The DOCUMENT directory contains documentation that is considered to be
either necessary or useful for users to understand the archive data sets.
Documents may be included in multiple forms (ASCII, PDF, MS Word, HTML
with image file pointers, etc.). Documents in different formats are
included in subdirectories that collect together those with the same
content. Included are the following documents.
❮DOCUMENT❯ DOCINFO.TXT: Identifies and describes the function of each
file in the DOCUMENT directory. (This File)
❮DOCUMENT\DDR_SIS❯ EPPS_DDR_SIS.PDF (.DOCX, .TXT, .LBL): The EPPS DDR SIS:
"MESSENGER Software Interface Specification for the Derived Data Records
of the Energetic Particle and Plasma Spectrometer". The document is provided
in multiple formats, the original being the MS Word document which has been
saved in the PDF/A archive format, and in plain ASCII text. The PDS label
describes all of the document versions.
❮DOCUMENT/FLUXMAP_PITCHANGLE_TUTORIAL❯ Contains a tutorial whose purpose is
to enable the user to construct 2D angular flux maps (AFM) and energy resolved
pitch angle (ERPA) distributions from observations by the Fast Imaging Plasma
Spectrometer (FIPS) on MESSENGER. These data products are useful for a
variety of investigations of the Mercury plasma environment. Studies of the
plasma mantle and sodium plasma population have made extensive use of the AFM
to investigate plasma isotropy or bulk flow directions (Gershman et al. 2015;
DiBraccio et al. 2015). Work done with the magnetic cusp at Mercury utilized
both the AFM and the ERPA distribution. With the combination of the
directional and pitch angle information, details of the energization and
precipitation processes in the cusp could be elucidated (Raines et al. 2014).
The tutorial includes a primary document, sample IDL codes and sample data.
❮DOCUMENT/NTP_TUTORIAL❯ Contains a turorial whose purpose is to enable the user
to interpret the density, temperature, and pressure (NTP) moments from
observations by the Fast Imaging Plasma Spectrometer (FIPS) on MESSENGER.
These parameters are useful for a variety of investigations of Mercury?s
plasma environment. For example, these moments were used to determine the
average characteristics of the plasma sheet (Raines et al., 2011;
Gershman et al., 2014) and to distinguish the plasma sheet from the
magnetotail lobes (Sun et al., 2016). The derived moments were also used
to assess the pressure balance across the dayside magnetopause to understand
the nature of dayside magnetic reconnection at Mercury (Gershman et al., 2013).
he tutorial includes a primary document, sample IDL codes and sample data.
