Prior to SOI (Saturn Orbital Insertion) the INMS instrument was evacuated and the aperture was closed by a cover installed prior to launch. While some data were collected in order to establish a baseline calibration, and obtain operation experience, no scientifically useful data were returned until the INMS cover was jettisoned just prior to SOI, permitting measurements of the ion and neutral constituents.
